How to make pure coconut oil?
Coconut oil has been used for variety of purposes from the past. Even though, coconut oil has many benefits and uses, the quality depends entirely on the manufacturing process. Today, I will be explaining you two methods of making hot pressed coconut oil.
Method 1:
The first method consists of few steps and it consumes some time too. Here are the steps to be followed.
The first step is selecting matured coconuts. The matured coconuts only provide copra with high yield. So, selecting matured coconut is so important.
The number of coconuts to be selected depends on your requirement of coconut oil. The conversion ratio of coconut to copra (dried coconut meat) varies from 20 to 30 percent.
If 30 percent means, 1 Kilogram of dehusked coconut will give, 300 grams of copra.
Dehusk the matured coconut and split the nuts into halves as shown in the above picture. Keep the splitted nuts in sunlight for a day. You have to dry the nuts till the meat comes out of the shell.
The removed half dried meat is the raw material for making coconut oil. Dry the meat (hereafter called as copra) under sunlight for 3 to 5 days to remove the moisture content.
The next is the grading of copra. The copra should not have any impurities and dark spots inside its white layer. If it is there, take it away. The copra to coconut oil conversion rate is around 62 to 64 percent. It also varies depend on quality of copra.
1 Kilogram of copra with give around 600 - 640 grams of coconut oil based on its oil content.
After selecting well dried and good copra, you can take to the crushing center. The selection of coconut and copra has a direct effect on the quality of coconut oil. If you select young nuts, you will not get proper quality coconut oil.
Make sure that the expeller has been cleaned before they start crushing your copra in the crushing center. You can add herbs to the oil if you are going to use the coconut oil only for hair care.
Once crushed, filter the extracted coconut oil using clean cotton cloth.
In industries, copra will be chopped into pieces and roasted in steam and also filtered using advanced techniques 2 to 3 times.
You can use the filtered coconut oil for skin, for hair, for cooking etc...
